Given the title "Pontifical" in 1922, the Pontifical Mission Societies have special responsibility in the Universal Church. They are under the direct canonical jurisdiction of the Pope, who, together with the entire body of Bishops, remind the faithful of their Baptismal call to mission, as they gather basic support for more than 1,150 mission dioceses in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands and Latin America.  The Pontifical Mission Societies include the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Missionary Childhood Association, the Society of St. Peter Apostle, and the Missionary Union of Priests and Religious.

Starting this Month of Thanks – With Faith…

As we begin November, the Month of Thanks, how can we take the opportunity to be grateful for our faith in our daily lives? Perhaps we can take time for a nearby pilgrimage, make a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, or pray the World Mission Rosary.

Consider this example from the young faithful in Arequipa, Peru who participated in a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Chapi, about 37 miles from the city, to prepare for the Feast of All Saints on November 1st. Thousands of young people arrived at the Marian Shrine the evening before, foregoing secular celebrations of Halloween, and had moments of prayer and fun that included a music concert, a dance show, confessions, a great tribute to the Virgin and a concluding Mass.

This was the third year that over 4,000 lived the “Youth Festival for Faith and Life,” which began in the Year of Faith. His Exc. Mgr. Javier Del Rio Alba, Archbishop of Arequipa, described this event that took place at the Marian Shrine and prayed for the participants, “Therefore, we will pray for our young people and ask the maternal protection of the Virgin of Chapi, in the certainty that she more than anyone else can bring us to Jesus Christ.”
